Opioid Addiction
Opioid addiction is a serious and increasing public health problem characterized by intense cravings and compulsive opioid use despite negative consequences. Opioids- a class of drugs naturally derived from the opium poppy plant- are widely prescribed for pain relief, but can also be acquired illicitly and abused. Long-term opioid use can lead to physical dependence and addiction, with severe consequences such as overdose and death. Treatment for opioid addiction typically begins with detoxification to rid the body of the drug, followed by therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and medication-assisted treatment. Increased awareness of opioid addiction and improved access to evidence-based treatment, such as medication-assisted treatment, are urgently needed to address this public health crisis.
