Heroin Addiction

Heroin addiction is a severe and life-threatening medical condition caused by the chronic use of the opioid drug, heroin. Heroin causes physical dependence by inducing changes in the brain that alter one's impulse control and cause drug-seeking behaviour. Heroin addiction is associated with an array of health, social and economic problems. Treatment strategies include medication-assisted treatment, behavioural therapy, and social support. Evidence-based approaches to managing heroin addiction can reduce associated morbidity and mortality, improve quality of life, and reduce healthcare costs.
