Epidemiology

Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events in defined populations, and the application of this study to the control of diseases and other health problems. It is an important science that helps us understand how disease spreads throughout a population, how diseases may be linked to certain behaviors, and how efforts can be made to prevent and control the spread of disease. Epidemiology has been used to identify risk factors for infectious diseases, as well as non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. In addition, epidemiologists study the impact of a health intervention, such as a new drug or vaccine, on a population's health status. Through their work, epidemiologists in the public health field are often instrumental in assessing the effectiveness of health interventions and in providing the evidence for improved public health outcomes.
