Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mental illness that is marked by patterns of unstable emotions, behavior, and relationships. People with BPD experience extreme swings in mood, from feelings of abandonment, emptiness and hopelessness to intense anger and bouts of aggression. They often have difficulty in regulating their emotions and have difficulty trusting others, leading to intense and unstable relationships. BPD can have significant impacts on quality of life, leading to high levels of stress, self-harm and suicidal thoughts or attempts. Treatment for BPD typically involves a combination of therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral, dialectical behavior, and psychodynamic therapies, as well as medication. With proper treatment, those with BPD can learn to better manage their emotions and behavior, and can lead fulfilling and meaningful lives.
