Biology of Addiction
Addiction is a complex disorder of the brain. It is caused by changes in the brain’s wiring, which results in impaired control of impulses and reward-seeking behavior. Addiction has significant physical, psychological and social consequences and can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or socioeconomic status. Biological factors, such as genetics, can play a role in addiction, but environmental and psychological factors are also important. Addiction is treatable, and there are a variety of evidence-based approaches available to help individuals recover. An understanding of the biology of addiction is important to aid in the development of effective prevention and treatment strategies.
