Addiction in Pregnancy
Addiction, especially in pregnancy, is a major public health problem, with potentially severe consequences to the health and wellbeing of both the mother and the unborn child. Pregnant women who are addicted may experience a range of difficulties, including an increased risk of preterm labor and delivery, low birth weight, and substance withdrawal symptoms in the newborn. Early identification and treatment of addiction in pregnancy is necessary to minimize risks and ensure the mother and baby can lead healthy lives. Many treatment options are available to pregnant women, including medication-assisted treatment, behavioral therapies and various support services.
