Addiction and Spirituality

Addiction and spirituality are intertwined, often in complex ways. Addictions can lead to the loss of one's spiritual connection, while the pursuit of spirituality can help those recovering from addiction. Spirituality is the sense of connection to something greater than oneself, and spiritual practices can be a powerful tool in the recovery journey. Examples may include meditation, prayer, mindfulness-based activities, attending religious services, and nature-based activities. Studies have found that spirituality is linked to improved psychological outcomes, physical health, and resilience in the face of stressors. It can also act as a source of hope and meaning, which may help in abstaining from addictive behaviors and furthering recovery.
