The importance and need for this special issue:
The basic principles of behavioural and cognitive psychology constitute the CBT model. Behavioural therapy is accepted as first wave, and the cognitive behavioural is the second. Cognitive model proposes that dysfunctional thinking is common to all psychological disorders. Learning to evaluate thinking in a more realistic and adaptive way help to improve the emotional state and behaviour. CBT uses various techniques in order to educate patients for solving current problems and modifying dysfunctional thinking and behaviour.
Schema therapy takes elements from cognitive-behavioural, attachment, Gestalt, object relations, constructivist, and psychoanalytic schools. It was developed for the treatment failures and the difficult cases of cognitive behavioural therapy. It focuses on the core psychological themes –Early Maladaptive Schemas.
The new wave is the third wave, comprising the mindfulness-based therapies. Mindfulness and accepted based treatment approaches include mindfulness-based stress reduction, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy, and dialectical behavioural therapy.
CBT for psychosis was firstly described by Aaron Beck in 1952, but more frequently used in last 20 years. Due to its problem solving approach, educational style and its flexibility, it is suggested as an effective method together with medication in the treatment of psychotic patients. Recently the mindfulness based interventions has been started to use in the treatment of psychosis. Their focus is the process itself and the individual’s relation with the experience.
This issue aims to focus on all topics regarding the first, second and third wave interventions of psychosis.
