Biography:

  • Brinda Mahadevan received her BSc. in Agriculture from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore India, and an MS in Bacteriology and Ph.D. in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, and Biochemistry from the University of Idaho, USA.  
  • Brinda started her postdoctoral research in molecular biology and toxicology, investigating the mechanisms of chemical carcinogenesis at Oregon State University.  
  • Later, as Research Assistant Professor in the department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology at Oregon State University, she initiated her independent research career in elucidating the mechanisms by which carcinogenic substances affect the ability of environmental complex mixtures to alter the cellular enzymes in their conversion to DNA binding metabolites.  
  • She has trained and mentored many students and was awarded the “2008 EMS Student Education Award in recognition of her sincere dedication to student and young investigator members of the Environmental Mutagen & Genomics Society (EMGS).  
  • Brinda started her career in the pharmaceutical industry by joining Schering-Plough Research Institute as a senior scientist in the department of Genetic Toxicology/Mechanistic and Predictive Toxicology.  
  • She continued to function as a study director/subject matter expert (genetic toxicology) at Merck Research Laboratories prior to coming to Abbott Laboratories.  Currently, Brinda is a Manager, Toxicologist, Regulatory Affairs, at Abbott Nutrition, Abbott Laboratories.
  • Brinda has been an active member of the Environmental Mutagen & Genomics Society (EMGS), Genetic Toxicology Association (GTA), Occupational Toxicology Round Table (OTR) and the Society of Toxicology (SOT).  
  • She served as the President of the Women In Toxicology-Special Interest Group (SIG) of SOT and a councilor in the EMGS board of directors.  
  • She has given numerous scientific presentations and chaired/co-chaired sessions at the EMS, SOT and GTA annual meetings and leads the “Risk Assessment (SIG) at EMGS.  
  • In addition, she has published and has served as an adhoc reviewer for several peer reviewed scientific journals.
